Celebration Machine
Design Principles II
Spring Semester, 2020

Project Objective:
To construct a device with several different movements which ultimately expresses aspects of celebration and then to use the work to create a short film.

My project partner (Alex Wu) and I focused on using a flexible framework to convey the chaos and adaptability of a party. For instance, gear teeth can be swapped out to change the motion of the device without affecting the rest of the structure.
Where it all starts: collaborative sketches of frame designs

We wanted to comment on the fleeting nature of college gatherings, which often sprout up spontaneously and energetically only to be diverted to pause their intensity and move elsewhere or disperse. Here the parts all play off each other intricately and create (although somewhat disconnected from their environment) something delicate, but clamorously joyous.
